2023 Social Media Trends

Here are the up-and-coming social media trends for 2023.

As we look ahead to 2023, it’s clear that social media will continue to play a major role in our daily lives. But what can we expect from the world of social media in the coming year? Here are a few trends to watch out for:

  1. Increased emphasis on privacy and security. In the wake of several high-profile data breaches and privacy scandals, social media users are becoming more concerned about their online security. As a result, we can expect to see social media platforms putting a greater emphasis on protecting user data and improving their security measures. This may include things like more robust encryption and better tools for managing privacy settings.
  2. The rise of ephemeral content. One of the biggest trends we’ve seen in recent years is the popularity of “stories” on social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat. These temporary, often spontaneous posts have become a major part of the social media landscape, and we can expect to see this trend continue to grow in 2023.
  3. The growth of live streaming. In recent years, live streaming has exploded in popularity, with platforms like Facebook Live, Twitch, and Periscope allowing users to share live video with their followers in real-time. In 2023, we can expect to see even more people taking advantage of this feature, both for personal use and for professional purposes like broadcasting events and meetings.
  4. The rise of social commerce. Social media platforms are increasingly being used as a way for businesses to connect with customers and sell their products. In 2023, we can expect to see this trend continue to grow, with more and more businesses using social media as a primary sales channel. This may include things like integrated shopping options within social media apps, as well as more sophisticated advertising and targeting tools.
  5. The growth of video content. Video content has been on the rise for several years now, and this trend is only set to continue in 2023. As more and more people consume video on their smartphones and other mobile devices, social media platforms will continue to invest in tools and features that make it easy to create, share, and consume video content.

Overall, it’s clear that social media will remain a central part of our lives in 2023. As users become more concerned about privacy and security, we can expect to see platforms focus on these issues, while the rise of ephemeral content, live streaming, and social commerce will continue to drive innovation and growth.

Here are the up-and-coming 2023 social media trends on each platform:

Facebook

Facebook didn’t have the greatest year in 2022, so Zuckerberg & Co are determined to pick the app up again! In the shadow of Instagram and TikTok, there is a lot of work to do.

Facebook’s feed usually consists of content from our Facebook friends, with a few ads now and then. This will no longer be the case very soon! In 2023, Facebook will be focusing more on AI-recommended content. Basically, about 40% of the content you see will be from people you have never connected with before. This new algorithm change will push the best content from all Facebook users to allow a bigger space for connection.

As we all know, the Metaverse is also a hot topic in the digital world. Facebook will be making more use of the Metaverse to increase user engagement. One of the features they will be adding is the use of avatars in the Metaverse itself, as well as in video chats.

Facebook does have a leg-up on all other social platforms though. Although there are news updates, video content and ads, Facebook will still be known as the ideal app for life updates from family members and loved ones.

Instagram

Instagram is an incredibly well-known app, and they are constantly growing with up to 2 billion monthly active users at the moment! Instagram’s algorithm will also be taking a turn in 2023. This turn will be consisting of an algorithm that is similar to TikTok.

Instagram will also be making more use of AI-recommended content to increase connections and engagement. This content, as suspected, will consist of a lot more reels. This confirms the fact that Short-video Marketing is going to be massive this year! This change in the algorithm was trialled and tested before, but users were complaining about the content in their feed not being tailored to their interests. Regardless, Instagram will be pushing this in 2023, hopefully in a better format than before.

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) will also be seen on Instagram. These are digital art collectables than can be created and collected by users. The reason for this feature is to allow VR (Virtual Reality) experiences, which consist of 3D creation.

Regarding Instagram ads, interaction is a big goal that Instagram is aiming to achieve in 2023.  This will be done with improved live shopping features.

Twitter

Twitter is such a difficult app to predict, and Elon Musk is incredibly vague when explaining his ideas for the app. The new updates that we have heard of are not set in stone yet, but this is what you could see from Twitter in 2023.

Musk & co are thinking of adding a subscription feature to Twitter. Basically, this feature would allow users access to more and better analytics features and insights. They could get this right though! In 2020, Twitter removed a handful of analytics features that were never replaced, so the desire for more insights is already there.

This update is for all users craving that little blue tick next to their name. Twitter wants to charge you for this too! Verifications could possibly come with a monthly fee for users. Although we understand the desire that Twitter is trying to create, we don’t see this feature doing very well in 2023.

Say goodbye to restrictions! Twitter has had very strict restrictions on tweets, comments and so on, but they’re thinking of taking a step back from this. Elon Musk wants Twitter users to have “freedom of speech” as long as it remains within legal terms of free speech.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn has always been known as the go-to app for business owners and job seekers, and this reputation will be proudly held high in 2023. Basically, LinkedIn wants exactly what they have, only better!

These changes include things like improved video connection and improved user experience on the app. After all, this app is supposed to be incredibly user-friendly and tailored to every user’s unique interests.

Something new that LinkedIn wants to focus on more is audio content. Podcasts are becoming more and more popular, and LinkedIn is hopping onto this trend too. Audio content will begin to grow and flourish on the app this year.

Another update that we think LinkedIn is on the right track up is a better feed presentation. As we mentioned before, this app is supposed to be very user-friendly. It’s been quite a while since LinkedIn had a good app update, so a new feed vibe sounds fantastic!

TikTok

Ah, TikTok, the world’s (and our) favourite social media app! It’s the app that all other apps seem to be stalking and copying through and through. But, even though TikTok is absolutely owning the digital world, they are bringing in some updates as well.

TikTok will be adding shopping and live stream commerce, which creates competition for Facebook Marketplace and Instagram Shopping. So now, all those products we’re obsessing over in TikTok videos, you’ll be able to shop those products directly on TikTok.

Let’s talk about making some cash. Creators do get paid by TikTok, but as the app gets bigger, those payment amounts seem to get smaller. To resolve this issue, TikTok will be bringing in a new payment creator method that keeps creators satisfied.

This last update is way bigger than it seems. TikTok is soon going to make the decision to separate itself completely from the CCP. This is to avoid the app from being banned in major countries like the US.

So, there are big things coming! Instagram and Facebook are on the hunt for an algorithm that TikTok is currently slaying at. To be honest, we are super excited to see what else is coming in the digital world this year! Aren’t you?
